I'll never forget the evening that Fred started to die. Fred couldn't seem to stop shivering, despite the long sleeves, wool vest and suit jacket. And his skin turned weird shades. I didn't think it was the restaruant lights.
"Fred," I said, "You're looking a little green. Shall I take you home?"
"I'm fine, Martin. It's only a little chill," Fred said. He even grinned, as he hunched his Clint-Eastwood-eske frame more snuglyinto his coat. His teeth were clattering as he stabbed at a carrot with his fork, but he tried to hide it from us.
He and the guys, including me, were enjoying a guy's night at "The Office," a downtown eatery. Fred was our mentor, our father, maybe even our mascot. We were amazed as how he continued to keep pace with us. We were half his age, some of us less than half, and we all wished to be half as healthy as he was, especially at his age.
We finished our steaks, told the last punch-line and scattered, laughing, to our various homes and families. I dropped Fred at his place, staying with him until he was comfortably situated in his favorite recliner. Then I too headed home.
The news spread rapidly by phone the following morning ...
